1,300-pound shark caught off Los Angeles coast


NBC Los Angeles: Fishers on a boat out of Huntington Beach, California, caught a potentially world record-breaking mako shark that weighed 1,323.5 pounds.

The massive shark took two and a half hours to reel in and jumped out of the water five times, going 20 to 25 feet into the air as an angler from Mesquite, Texas fought it.

Man killed in New Zealand shark attack

BBC: A shark has killed a man off a beach near Auckland, New Zealand. The 47-year-old man was swimming when he was attacked. According to local media reports, police shot at the shark in a bid to rescue the man.

Shark attacks are rare in New Zealand. TVNZ reports only 11 fatal attacks have taken place since records began in 1847. (A total of 44 attacks have been recorded in New Zealand since that time.)

The shark, dubbed Brutus by surfers near western Australia’s Wedge Island, north of Perth, mauled surfer Ben Linden as he surfed with a mate about 9 am Saturday. Police vessels are continuing to hunt the shark.

Australia’s Fisheries Minister Norman Moore gave the order for the shark to be killed if caught.
He also said the government was re-assessing whether great white sharks should remain protected species.
