Bloomberg News: King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has appointed female members to the Consultative Council for the first time, naming 30 women to the 150-member advisory body.The appointments, reported by the official Saudi Press Agency, came after Abdullah issued a decree requiring at least 20 percent of members should be women. It says they must observe Islamic law and be properly covered, and will enjoy full rights in the council, have a separate entrance to the chamber and sit in a special section apart from men.

Ikea under fire for removing women’s pictures from Saudi catalog

Sarah Attar becomes 1st Saudi female track Olympian

Al Arabiya: Sarah Attar has become the 1st female track and field athlete to represent Saudi Arabia at the Olympics. She finished last at the women’s 800 meter race, but received a standing ovation from the audience.

History made as 1st Saudi Arabian woman competes in Olympics

Wojdan Shaherkani made history today as the first Saudi Arabian woman ever to participate in the Olympic Games.

Shaherkani competed against Puerto Rico’s Melissa Mojica in the judo match. See the results from NBC Olympics.

Saudi women athletes to compete in Olympics

Reuters: Saudi Arabia will send 2 female athletes to the Olympics for the 1st time to represent the kingdom in London later this month, the International Olympic Committee says. The women are Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani, who will compete in judo, and runner Sarah Attar.

Human rights groups have been urging the IOC to ban Saudi Arabia from the Olympics if it did not agree to send female athletes to the Games. The decision means every country competing in this year’s Olympics will be represented by male and female athletes.
