The New York Times: New York State Senator Malcolm A. Smith, a contractor and real estate developer who rose to become the first black president of the State Senate, and City Councilman Daniel J. New York City’s Pattycake the gorilla dies

New York Daily News: Pattycake, the first gorilla born in New York City, who became a beloved favorite at the Bronx Zoo, has died. She was 40.

‘Pattycake was perhaps the best known gorilla at the Bronx Zoo, and an institution in New York City,’ said zoo director Jim Breheny. ‘Millions of children in New York City grew up with Pattycake.’

Photographer says was not within reach of man struck by subway train Today Show: A New York Post freelance photographer at the center of controversy for taking pictures of a man shortly before he was fatally struck by a subway train defended himself on the Today Show Wednesday. He says there was no way he could have saved the man. R. Umar Abbasi says the photos he took were very dark and lightened by the New York Post. He intended to use the flash to alert the subway driver there was a problem on the tracks. “If I was in a reachable distance, I would’ve grabbed him and tried to pull him,” Abbasi says of the victim.

Statue of Liberty illuminated again for first time since Hurricane Sandy

The Statue of Liberty was illuminated Friday evening for the first time since it was damaged by Superstorm Sandy.
The statue, one of the city’s top tourist attractions, has been closed because of damage resulting from the storm that hit New York Oct. 29, with no estimate on when it will reopen to visitors.
The monument, reports the Associated Press, was re-lit through temporary measures made possible by a donation of equipment and services from Musco Lighting to the National Park Foundation, which is the official charity of America’s national parks, according to a statement from the National Park Service.
 Another company, Natoli Construction, handled the lighting of the statue’s torch and crown.

Trains are so crowded on the Long Island Rail Road that dozens of people have missed trains. Lines for the ferry in Jersey City have stretched to several hundred people. And NJ Transit shut down its North Jersey Coast Line after overcrowding.
