Bloomberg: Apple has introduced a fourth-generation version of the iPad with a so-called retina display and 128gb of memory, twice the storage capacity of models already on the market.

Apple formally announces Oct 23 event

CNBC:Apple has announced that it will host an event Oct. 23. The company is expected to reveal a smaller iPad, along with a smaller MacBook Pro with retina display.

Reports indicate the company will unveil the smaller iPad, dubbed ‘iPad mini,’ with a screen that is slightly larger than 7 inches. The current iPad is slightly more than 9 inches.

Hackers say they stole 12 million Apple user IDs

Hackers associated with Anonymous claim to have stolen more than 12 million Apple device identification numbers and related personal data from an FBI computer. Read more on ZDNet.com.

Update (4:53 p.m. EDT): The FBI has issued a statement on the hackers’ claim. All Things Digital has the full text:

“The FBI is aware of published reports alleging that an FBI laptop was compromised and private data regarding Apple UDIDs was exposed. At this time there is no evidence indicating that an FBI laptop was compromised or that the FBI either sought or obtained this data.”

'Not as cool' Samsung Galaxy tablet wins round against iPad

Reuters: Samsung Electronics has defeated Apple in the latest round of the rivals’ patent wars. A British judge has ruled that Samsung’s Galaxy tablets do not infringe Apple’s designs for the iPad because they’re ‘not as cool.’

Apple announces new MacBooks, iOS 6

Apple announced an overhaul of its line of MacBook laptops and a new version of its mobile operation system for iPhones and iPads today at the World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The New York Times reports:

The new mapping system [in iOS 6] will provide drivers with turn-by-turn directions, a feature that has long been available in other smartphones. Apple created the 3-D view in its maps service, called Flyover, by shooting aerial photographs.
