Scientists from Chicago’s Field Museum have discovered a new “top predator” dinosaur in a region of 100-million-year-old rock in Utah.
The 4-ton, 30-foot animal is a significant precursor to Tyrannosaurus rex and an important part of an emerging fossil record for the continent, the museum says.

One World Trade Center in New York has been declared the tallest building in the United States, topping the Willis Tower in Chicago, an architectural organization ruled today.
The Associated Press reports that the tower built on the site of the 9/11 attacks stands at a symbolically important 1,776 feet tall including the 408-foot needle. It officially would have been considered 1,368 feet tall without the needle. The Willis Tower is 1,451 feet tall.

1 World Trade Center is tallest US building, experts rule

One World Trade Center in New York has been declared the tallest building in the United States, topping the Willis Tower in Chicago, an architectural organization ruled today.

The Associated Press reports that the tower built on the site of the 9/11 attacks stands at a symbolically important 1,776 feet tall including the 408-foot needle. It officially would have been considered 1,368 feet tall without the needle. The Willis Tower is 1,451 feet tall.

3-year-old boy among 13 people shot in Chicago

Chicago Tribune: 13 people have been shot at a park in Chicago’s South Side, including a 3-year-old boy who suffered a gunshot wound to the head, in what police say appears to be a gang-related incident.

Among the 13 people shot were the 3-year-old boy, 2 teens, and 10 adult.

No fatalities have been reported.

The uncle of the 3-year-old boy was shot to death on Labor Day, Sept. 2.

Icicles cover smoky remains of massive Chicago blaze

NBC News Photoblog: A massive fire ripped through a Chicago South Side warehouse on Tuesday night, as firefighters were hampered by bone-chilling temperatures so low that water froze on their uniforms.

On Jan. 23, firefighters (pictured) sprayed down hot spots on the ice-covered warehouse. One-third of all Chicago firefighters had been on the scene at one point or another, trying to put out the flames.

Chicago lottery winner died from cyanide poisoning

AP: The sudden death of a Chicago man just as he was about to collect nearly $425,000 in lottery winnings was initially ruled a result of natural causes. On Monday, the Chicago Police Department announced a homicide investigation. Medical examiners — responding to a relative’s pleas — found that Urooj Khan, 46, died shortly after ingesting a lethal dose of cyanide.
