Paris riot police fought back crowds who pushed their way onto Paris’ landmark Champs-Elysees avenue as part of a huge protest against a draft law allowing same-sex couples to marry and adopt children.

Hundreds of thousands of people — conservative activists, children, retirees, priests — converged on the capital Sunday in a last-ditch bid to stop the bill, many bused in from the French provinces.

Indian gang-rape victim’s condition deteriorating, hospital says

The condition of a 23-year-old Indian medical student, whose gang rape in New Delhi triggered nationwide protests, has deteriorated and there are signs her vital organs have failed, the Singapore hospital treating her says.

Reuters reports that family members “have been informed that her condition has deteriorated and they are currently by her side to encourage and comfort her,” Mount Elizabeth Hospital Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Loh said in a statement.

NBC News: Tens of thousands rallied in Karachi, Pakistan, Sunday in support of 14-year-old Malala Yousafzai, who was shot and critically wounded by the Taliban for promoting girls’ education and criticizing the militant group.

The demonstration is the largest since Yousafzai and 2 of her classmates were shot Oct. 9 while returning home from school.

Greek police fired teargas at hooded youths hurling petrol bombs and stones as tens of thousands took to the streets in Greece’s biggest anti-austerity demonstration in months on Wednesday.

The clashes occurred after more than 50,000 people marched to parliament chanting “We won’t submit to the troika (of lenders)” and “EU, IMF Out!” on a day of strikes against a new round of cuts demanded by EU and IMF lenders.

Reuters: South African riot police opened fire on striking miners armed with machetes and sticks at a platinum mine Thursday, killing at least a dozen men. The incident is the deadliest in a week of union violence.

It is not immediately clear whether police were fired upon. The police themselves opened fire on a group of men who burst out from behind a vehicle. There has been no official confirmation of the death toll yet.

Riot police, protesters clash amid anti-austerity demonstrations

Spain announced a 65 billion euro ($79.85 billion) austerity package that includes tax hikes and spending cuts on Wednesday, a day after it won approval from its euro partners for a huge bailout of the country’s stricken banks.

At least 24 people have been killed and more 200 injured in the centre of Cairo after a protest over an attack on a church erupted into the worst violence since the 18-day uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak as president of Egypt in February.

Trouble began when a demonstration against the attack in southern Egypt was reportedly met by gunfire close to the state television building.

Fighting spread to Tahrir Square and surrounding streets. Hospitals where the wounded were being treated also came under attack.

State television announced that a curfew was being imposed on the city’s downtown area and Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the February uprising that overthrew the former president. The curfew would last from 2am to 7am (midnight to 5am GMT) on Monday.

Appealing for calm after more than 1,000 security force personnel were deployed, interim prime minister Essam Sharaf said: “What is taking place are not clashes between Muslims and Christians but attempts to provoke chaos and dissent.”

“The only beneficiary of these events and acts of violence are the enemies of the January revolution and the enemies of the Egyptian people, both Muslim and Christian”
