100 hours of video uploaded every minute by YouTube users

The Verge: Google revealed Sunday on YouTube’s eighth birthday that the video sharing website has reached new uploading heights with around 100 hours of video uploaded every minute by users.

A year ago today, 72 hours of video were uploaded every minute. The site also has reached record-breaking viewership with more than one billion people visiting the site every month.

Anchorage sets record for longest snow season

NBC News: 232 days - it took over 30 years for Anchorage to set a new record for the longest snow season on record.

The National Weather Service measured 2/10ths of an inch just after 9 p.m. Friday and 1/10th Saturday morning - breaking the old record of 230 days set in 1981-1982.

Other parts of the city had much higher amounts of snow, however official measurements must be consistent and observed at the Sand Lake forecast office. The recent snowfall also broke the daily record for other records including liquid precipitation and lowest maximum temperature for May 17.

Oxbow upsets Orb in Preakness

Associated Press: Oxbow has won the 138th Preakness Stakes horse race, ruining Kentucky Derby winner Orb’s bid to capture the Triple Crown.

Orb finished fourth, ending the brown colt’s five-race winning streak. Since 1950, only two horses have won the middle jewel of the Triple Crown from the No. 1 post position.

Thousands in Italy march in austerity protests

Reuters: Thousands participated in austerity protests in Rome on Saturday.

Italy is in the midst of its longest recession since 1970 and unemployment is close to record highs, with young people being hit particularly hard with a 38% jobless rate. Approval rates for the government have dropped from 43% to 34% in the last month.

Facebook exec: ‘It’s OK for women to cry at work’

AFP: Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg has said in an interview published Saturday it is OK for women to cry at work, share emotions and be honest about their femininity.

In an interview with India’s Mint business daily, the 43-year-old admitted: “I cry at work,” adding women are not “one type of person Monday through Friday” and “then a different person in the nights and weekend.”

CBS News: Millions of U.S. children are living with mental health disorders, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC rounded up rates of various mental health conditions among U.S. children for its first comprehensive report on the state of mental health among U.S. children between 3 and 17.

About one in five children of these ages have a mental health disorder, according to the CDC, and estimates appear to be increasing.

Childhood mental health disorders include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders, behavior disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders and Tourette Syndrome.

Toronto’s mayor denies smoking crack cocaine in video

The Globe and Mail: Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has denied claims that he was recently filmed smoking crack cocaine.

“It’s just ridiculous,” he said as he left his home and got into his black SUV. “It’s another Toronto Star…”, he said before shutting his car door and driving away.

Mr. Ford’s response comes after online news site Gawker posted a story in which one of its reporters claimed he had viewed a video in which the mayor was clearly seen smoking crack cocaine.

Greek member of parliament shouts ‘Heil Hitler’ during session

Washington Post: A Greek member of parliament from the far-right party Golden Dawn is heard shouting ’Heil Hitler’ during an argument with members of the a far-left party, according to reports.

Here’s what’s thought to have happened: [Panayiotis] Iliopoulos, who had recently assaulted some immigrant vendors at an Athens port, got into an argument with members of Greece’s far-left Syriza party, whom he called “goats” and “filthy, scurrilous” people.

The parliament’s acting speaker, also a member of Syriza, asked Iliopoulos to leave. “Go away before we send you away,” he said, according to the Greek Reporter. As a scrum of Golden Dawn lawmakers filed out of the room, shouting angrily on the way out, “Heil Hitler” is audible at three different moments.

Reuters reports that Golden Dawn denies a neo-Nazi label though its emblem resembles the Swastika and there are published photographs of its supporters giving Nazi-style salutes.

Top Japanese chef killed in alleged attack by angry customers

9 News: Japanese star chef Miki Nozawa was killed on the German holiday island of Sylt following an alleged dispute with two disgruntled guests about a dish of fried noodles.

The 57-year-old died on Monday as a result of his injuries in the intensive care unit of a local hospital, said Ulrike Stahlmann-Liebelt, the senior public prosecutor from the nearby town of Flensburg.

Boston bombing suspect left note in boat, officials tell Times

New York Times: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev scrawled a note inside the hull of the boat where he was hiding that said the Boston Marathon attack was retribution for wars the United States waged in Iraq and Afghanistan, two law enforcement officials confirmed to the Times.

The note stated that if you attack one Muslim, you attack all Muslims, an official said, speaking generally about its content.

The note was first reported by CBS News, and the Times said it could serve as important evidence against Tsarnaev, the younger brother of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, a onetime boxer who is considered the mastermind behind the bombings.

New Orleans mayor: 2nd suspect arrested in parade shooting

The Times-Picayune: New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu confirmed that a second suspect had been arrested in the Mother’s Day second line shooting that injured 20 people.

New Orleans police said that four others were arrested for harboring suspects.

The second suspect arrested Thursday was identified as Shawn Scott, 24, brother of Akein Scott, 19, who was arrested Wednesday night and charged with 20 counts of attempted second-degree murder.

Authorities said Shawn Scott also will face 20 counts of attempted second-degree murder, as well as heroin and other drug charges.

David Beckham retires from professional soccer

Daily Mail: David Beckham has announced his retirement from professional soccer.

The 38-year-old former LA Galaxy, Real Madrid and Manchester United midfielder turned down a one-year contract extension at current club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). He will retire at the end of the season.

“I’m thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level,” Beckham said in a statement.

Scientists share images of lost city in Honduras

NBC News: A high-tech team of scientists and filmmakers shared pictures of what appears to have been a centuries-old civilization in Honduras, one year after they used laser-mapping technology to identify traces of structures in the thick jungle.

The square-shaped and rounded structures, seen in computerized elevation maps of a rugged rain forest, may have been the last vestiges of pyramids, palaces and houses in a fabled settlement known as “la Ciudad Blanca,” or the White City.

NBC DFW: At least two people are dead after reported tornadoes slammed into Hood County, Texas. The Hood County sheriff reported at least 100 people are injured.

Several homes were completely destroyed in the storm and a triage center has been set up. Emergency responders are preparing for possible mass causalities in the area.

Separate tornadoes reportedly damaged the towns of Cleburne and Millsap, Texas.

Large, “grapefruit-size” hail also pelted a nearby Texas town.

Google launches new music streaming service

CNET: Google announced it has launched a new music streaming service, Google Play Music All Access.

At Google’s I/O conference, engineering director Chris Yerga said All Access will cost $9.99 a month, and users get a 30-day free trial. It launches today in the U.S., with additional countries coming soon.

The move puts Google in direct competition with music streaming companies like Pandora and Spotify, and also potentially with Apple, which has been inching in that direction. …

Previously, Google Play users could stream music they bought from the app, but the new service would let people stream songs they haven’t purchased as well. Users can now blend their songs with a catalog with thousands of other tracks available in All Access.

Doctor Who and Star Wars fans clash at sci-fi convention

Norwich Evening News: Police were called to a British sci-fi convention following reports that rival fan-clubs had become involved in a violent dispute.

A group of visiting Doctor Who fans were reportedly arguing with a local Star Wars enthusiasts’ club at the Norwich Star Wars Club event, held in the University of East Anglia, police said. But after talking to witnesses and reviewing CCTV police officers said no actual assault took place.

More than a dozen sci-fi fans from both groups – including several in fancy dress – were involved in a bitter exchange outside the venue. It was allegedly sparked over a disagreement involving someone asking Doctor Who actor Graham Cole for an autograph.

According to an annual list by Sports Illustrated he is projected to make $90 million in 2013. Miami Heat basketball player LeBron James is a distant second at $56.5 million.

The Army says the coordinator of a sexual assault prevention program at Fort Hood, Texas, is under investigation for “abusive sexual contact” and other alleged misconduct. He has been suspended from all duties.

The Army said a sergeant first class, whose name was not released, is accused of pandering, abusive sexual contact, assault and maltreatment of subordinates.

Inspector general says management allowed tea party targeting

The Associated Press: The Treasury inspector general blames ineffective management at the Internal Revenue Service for allowing agents to improperly target tea party groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax exempt status.

In an upcoming report, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration says lax management allowed the practice to go on for 18 months. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the report ahead of its release.

The IRS on Friday apologized for targeting tea party as well as other conservative groups.

The report said that when asked by investigators, IRS supervisors said the criteria they used to decide which groups they examined were not influenced by people or organizations outside the IRS.

Earlier today, Attorney General Eric Holder said the Justice Department is investigating the IRS for targeting tea party groups. He also said the FBI will investigate to see if any laws were broken.
